Bears Belong in the wild

The practice of using bile from bear's gall bladders to treat liver problems, hemorrhoids and other ailments is common in Traditional Medicine (TM) in a number of Asian countries. However, the large-scale commercial exploitation of bears has only been around since the 1980s.

Nowadays, bear farms in Asia produce thousands of kilos of bile that are extracted from caged bears up to twice a day. Bear bile has begun to show up in a wide range of non-medicinal products such as bear bile wine and shampoo.

WSPA estimates there are currently more than 9,000 bears imprisoned in 167 farms in China alone with a further 6,000 in other parts of Asia.
